The Wizarding World Saw Other Battles Between Good

As the release date for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore approaches and the future of the series is unclear, there are many questions around how and when Fantastic Beasts will end, and here’s what J.K. Rowling has revealed about it. Back in 1997, readers were introduced to the Wizarding World in J.K. Rowling’s debut novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first entry in what would become a series of seven novels chronicling the story of “The Boy Who Lived” and his mission to stop Lord Voldemort, the darkest wizard of all.

However, many years before Harry Potter was born and Voldemort rose to power and became the most dangerous dark wizard in history, the Wizarding World saw other battles between good and evil and another dark wizard with dangerous plans for both the Wizarding and Muggle worlds: Gellert Grindelwald. To explore this part of the history of the Wizarding World, a spin-off prequel series of movies to the Harry Potter saga started in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on the guidebook of the same name by Rowling. Fantastic Beasts introduced the audience to magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), along with the latter’s plans to dominate Muggles.

Albus Dumbledore Defeats Gellert Grindelwald

Of course, the most important moment in the Global Wizarding War and the Fantastic Beasts timeline is the duel between Albus Dumbledore and his former friend and lover Gellert Grindewald. Rowling had previously said that the Fantastic Beasts series would cover 19 years of Wizarding World history, culminating in 1945, the year Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald – and as mentioned above, the trailer for Fantastic Beasts 3 shows this long-awaited duel. Many years prior, Dumbledore and Grindelwald made a blood pact, sealed with magic, to not fight each other. The vial that sealed the pact was kept by Grindelwald until Newt stole it in 1927, and at some point before 1945, the vial was destroyed, meaning the pact was no longer in effect.

Still, Dumbledore hesitated in confronting his old friend, but as Grindelwald continued his rise to power, he finally tracked him down. Dumbledore and Grindelwald then engaged in what is considered the greatest duel ever fought between two wizards. Dumbledore ended up as the winner of the duel, through which he also won the Elder Wand’s allegiance. After this historical duel, Albus Dumbledore returned to his place as Head of Transfiguration at Hogwarts and eventually became Headmaster.

Gellert Grindelwald Is Sent To Nurmengard

With Grindelwald defeated by Dumbledore, the latter brought him to the authorities. Grindelwald was sent to Nurmengard Castle, the wizarding prison built by himself to incarcerate his opponents and which served as the base of operations for him and his followers. Grindelwald spent the rest of his life imprisoned in the castle’s topmost cell, and in 1998, he was surprised to find Voldemort in his cell. Voldemort was on a mission to find the Elder Wand, but even though he was unarmed and defenseless against the only wizard more powerful than him, Grindelwald refused to tell him where the Elder Wand was, taunting and mocking him. Voldemort ended up killing Grindelwald, who never told him the location of the Elder Wand.

Newt Scamander’s Survival & Post-Wizarding War Work

Luckily for fans of Newt Scamander, the magizoologist survives the Global Wizarding War and continues leaving his mark in Wizarding World history. It’s unknown where Newt was and what he was doing while Dumbledore fought Grindelwald, so that’s a gap that Fantastic Beasts 3 will have to fill in, but Rowling has shared what Newt did post-Global Wizarding War. Newt married Tina Goldstein and had at least one child, and in 1947, he created the Werewolf Register (a list of all known werewolves in Great Britain), in 1965 he created the Ban on Experimental Breeding, a law to regulate the growth of wizard-bred magical creatures, which he considered his greatest achievement, and he worked with the Dragon Research and Restraint Bureau, which took him to different parts of the world and through which he collected information for new editions of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In 1992, he wrote another book, A Children’s Anthology of Monsters, for young readers, and his grandson, Rolf Scamander, married Luna Lovegood.

Tom Riddle Graduates From Hogwarts

1945 was not only the year of the peak of World War II in the Muggle world and the peak of the Global Wizarding War, but it was also the year of Tom Riddle’s Hogwarts graduation, and by then, he was already creating his first Horcruxes. During his sixth year at Hogwarts, Riddle’s plans to create Horcruxes got more serious when he questioned Professor Slughorn about them and the possibility of creating more than one, and not long after, he created his first two Horcruxes: the diary and the ring. Riddle graduated in 1945 and immediately approached then Headmaster Armando Dippet about teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts with the obscure and secret purpose of recruiting students for his army and learning more about the castle’s secrets – unfortunately for him, Dipper rejected the idea. Shortly after leaving Hogwarts, Riddle charmed Helena Ravenclaw into telling him the location of her mother’s diadem, which he later turned into his third Horcrux.

The Fantastic Beasts series, then, is set to end with one of the most important battles in Wizarding World history, the imprisonment of one of the darkest wizards to ever exist, and with the next dark wizard planning his rise to power and continuing his quest for immortality. So far, Fantastic Beasts hasn’t featured a young Tom Riddle, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the final movie (whether Secrets of Dumbledore or another one) shows Riddle graduating Hogwarts and creating his first Horcruxes, linking the series to that of Harry Potter.
