Blum Recently Stated He Is Working

 Jason Blum has expressed interest in releasing 10 future Halloween films, which means Michael Myers may be slashing his way into theaters for many years to come. After nearly a decade away from the big screen, Blum's production company Blumhouse brought the knife-wielding killer back with a purpose, as last year's film was well received by fans and critics alike, and became the highest grossing slasher since Wes Craven's Scream. Reports of a follow-up began before Halloween was released, and while nothing has been made official, Blum recently stated he is working to get a sequel greenlit. However, it seems Michael could be sticking around for more than just a follow-up to last year's movie.


The Halloween franchise has been taken in several different directions since the original film released in 1978, which has led to multiple timelines existing in the series. In the latest entry, director and co-writer David Gordon Green decided to create yet another timeline by ignoring all previous entries except the original movie. This decision allowed Jamie Lee Curtis to reprise her role as Laurie Strode but also eliminated the sibling connection established between herself and Michael. In the film, 40 years have gone by since Laurie first encountered Michael, but she has been suffering PTSD ever since. Curtis has expressed interest in returning for future movies, but only under the right circumstances. Despite not having an official announcement regarding the follow-up, a writer has reportedly been found and the cast, along with Curtis, is expected to return. With Blum wanting to add several more additions to the long-running series, those that waited years for Michael to return shouldn't worry about the slasher disappearing any time soon.


During an interview with Moviefone, Blum revealed that he wants to make 10 more Halloween movies. Before admitting that, Blum mentions that rights are not yet set for a sequel to Green's film. However, if everything is made official and a sequel is greenlit, this would be the first step in Blum's intentions with the franchise. When asked about plans to shoot another Halloween film alongside the latest entry, Blum answered:


Well, we had talked about it but right now we’re not shooting any Halloween movies right now because we don’t have deal rights to the sequels. But I certainly hope to make 10 more but I’ll start with one more.


Blumhouse has been responsible for several recent successes in the horror genre, with films like Get Out, Happy Death Day, The Purge, and now Halloween. In the past, Michael's returns weren't all met with a positive reception, many fans of the series recognize 2002's Halloween: Resurrection as the lowest point in the franchise. Luckily, Blum's sentiments sound like he wants to approach the idea of 10 sequels one at a time to avoid reaching a new low in the series. Despite Blum's interest in releasing several more films, it is important to remember that dragging the series out is what led to it losing its initial appeal. In the previous sequels, a backstory was given to Michael and this took away from the character because it was the absence of motive that made the original classic so scary to audiences. Of course, the idea of having more Halloween movies will spark interest from fans, but hopefully, these potential follow-ups learn from the mistakes of the previous sequels.

Fans of the Halloween franchise will have something to look forward to with Blum looking to add several more entries to the series. After years of waiting and several failed productions, Michael is back and he may be sticking around for a while. There is no denying that he is one of the more well-recognized slashers, and there is money to be made from the series. Despite that, as shown in the last film, Michael was always intended to be a different killer, and there is no rhyme or reason for why he does what he does. It remains to be seen if any future movies will keep that in mind, or if they will retread mistakes of the past. Blum's production company has handled its more recent series with care, so fans will expect the same with Halloween.
